Abia State Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu has used the opportunity of the National Association
of Nigeria Students (NANS) protest on the deteriorating state of education in the country to restate the commitment of his administration to ensure improved conducive environment for teaching and learning and enhancing educational facilities in tertiary institutions in the state.
NANS members had as part of the International students Day tagged “Save Education” embarked on nationwide peaceful protest to draw attention to the poor funding of the educational sector and the poor facilities in tertiary institutions.
Speaking while addressing the students, Governor Ikpeazu commended the students for embarking on a peaceful protest to bring to the attention, Federal government neglect of the sector.
Represented by his deputy, Sir Ude Oko Chukwu,Governor Ikpeazu said that his administration would remain responsive in meeting the educational needs of the state and the students assuring them that the proposed town hall meeting with the students would soon take place while paucity of fund was delaying the activities of the state scholarship board which has been reconstituted.
He further assured to tackle infrastructural deficiency in institutions in the state stating that education are accorded top priority in the affairs of the state.
On the issue of Abia State Polytechnic Aba, the governor disclosed that state government has released funds to meet their needs and that of Abia State College of Education Arochukwu challenges just as he did for the state University, Uturu.
Earlier, in their separate speeches, the NANS National Rep in the state, Comrade Modesta Okoli, Zonal Rep Abia State Chapter, Comrade Cokey Nwachukwu and Chairman Joint Campus Committee, Comrade Frank Eme Orji appealed to the Federal government to look into the poor state of tertiary institutions in the country as well as appealed to the state government to fulfill some of the promises made to them .
They used the occasion to commended the state governor, Dr Ikpeazu for his love for Abia students and assured him of their unalloyed support for his reelection come 2019.
