Transfer news: Arsenal and Chelsea battle for Suarez, Woodward’s dream signing for Man United

We are entering the hectic festive period where games come thick and fast, but the winter months also mean that the January transfer window is almost ready to open for business.

Tottenham became the first club since the transfer window system was implemented in 2003 to not make a summer signing this year, so they will be hoping to do some business come 2019. Mousa Dembele has been linked with a move to China or Italy – will Spurs allow the Belgian to go in January?

Elsewhere, West Ham opened the chequebook in the summer, and may dip into the market again. With Andriy Yarmolenko sustaining a serious injury, the Hammers could look to strengthen their attack to reduce their reliance on top scorer Marko Arnautovic.

And on the topic of the Austrian – will he even stay in east London after admitting that he wants to play Champions League football? Manchester United have been linked with a move for the Hammers talisman.

Arsenal continue to be linked with various wingers, with Lille’s Nicolas Pepe and Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele reported to be of interest to the Gunners.

What’s next for Paul Pogba at Manchester United? Will Ruben Loftus-Cheek remain a Chelsea player or seal a loan move away? And what of Aaron Ramsey’s Arsenal future? Could Unai Emery’s side cash in on the Welshman before the summer?

Here we’ll guide you through the day’s top transfer rumours from around the world.

Chelsea linked with United target

Porto defender Eder Militao is on a long, long list of reported targets that Manchester United are considering to help end their defensive woes.

And now, according to A Bola via Sport Witness, Chelsea are also in for the centre-back, and the deal could be worth €50m.

Maurizio Sarri has allegedly “signalled” his intent to sign the Brazilian, and may have an advantage in that the agents taking charge of the deal are Giuliano Bertolucci and Kia Joorabichian – who have worked with Chelsea on multiple other deals in the past.

Chelsea and Arsenal in for Barcelona attacker Suarez

But not that one. Both London clubs are said to be interested in a bid for Denis Suarez, who has found himself out of favour at Camp Nou.

But Calciomercato report that Milan are also considering a bid for the 24-year-old, who has only made two appearances this season.

Suarez is said to be keen on a move to the Gunners, with his contract expiring in 2020.

Chelsea want €12m for midfielder

Rumours about Cesc Fabregas have been circling for a while now. He’s been linked with a move away from the club after falling down in the pecking order under Maurizio Sarri, and with his contract up at the end of the season, he could leave for a cut-price deal in January.

For what it’s worth, the World Cup winner said he will not be leaving midway through the season.

And now claims have appeared from Gazzetta dello Sport via Sport Witness that Chelsea are asking for as much as €12m to consider selling him in the winter. Which, rather understandably, Milan consider “exorbitant” for a player with just six months left on his contract who is not currently in the first XI.

Ranieri could be partial to a Drink

Fulham meet Chelsea on Sunday, and there are some interesting sub-plots with Claudio Ranieri returning to Stamford Bridge once more, and amid reports of a move to rescue Danny Drinkwater from a lack of playing time, the Italian didn’t exactly rule it out.

I don’t know, let me see all my midfielders, it’s too early to say this or that.

I want to see who understands my philosophy and if there will be some changes, I’ll ask the chairman.

Chelsea to ‘battle’ for Pulisic

Christian Pulisic appears to be one of the hottest properties on the market in January – although it’s unclear whether he’ll actually leave Borussia Dortmund until next season.

Reports have linked Europe’s elite with a move for the USA youngster in the winter transfer window, and according to Goal, Chelsea are leading the charge with Eden Hazard’s future at the club still in doubt.

However, they’re not exactly keen on the £70m price tag being touted, and are set to battle with the German club to shift the goalposts to a more reasonable fee.

West Ham after Inter striker

Inter Milan forward Gabriel Barbosa – aka Gabigol – could be heading for the exit, with West Ham and Everton rumoured to be chasing his signature.

The Italian side are supposedly prepared to sell the 22-year-old for £18m after he spent the last year on loan at Brazilian side Santos, and the man once dubbed the new Neymar spoke to the Daily Mail about the Premier League in glowing terms.

They are all important clubs with top quality players. Hopefully everything will be good for everyone if we reach an agreement. There are many things involved, mainly Inter Milan as they hold my rights. It hasn’t been decided yet, but it is very unlikely I will remain in Brazil.

The Premier League always had great strikers and it is a joy to watch on TV. It is very competitive, fast-paced and dynamic, with loads of title contenders. There is quality everywhere, that’s why everybody loves it and I am no different. It attracts me a lot.

I follow the Brazilians, sometimes we talk and all of them love playing in the Premier League.

Mourinho’s comments about Kane, Alli & Eriksen highlights Spurs’ progress under Pochettino

Jose Mourinho has admitted that Manchester United are no longer able to prise away Spurs’ best players like they have done in recent years.

The likes of Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov made the switch up north, but Mourinho says Tottenham have progressed to the point where they can compete directly with the Manchester club.

Silva on Doucoure

Marco Silva has already signed his former charge in Richarlison but could he take a look at Abdoulaye Doucoure too? Here’s what the Everton manager said in his press conference on Friday:

It is normal for the rumours to start now ahead of the January market. We are happy with the team we have, I am happy with the players we have.

Of course, you are always aware about everything. We are doing our job behind the scenes as well. There are a lot of things to improve with our players, many things to keep growing as a squad. You always want to improve but the January window is not in my mind at the moment.

‘Ramsey should join West Ham’

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey should join West Ham – so says former Invincibles legend Lauren.

The Welsh playmaker will be out of contract in the summer, and currently there are no talks with the club to extend that deal. And Lauren told Sportingbet that the Hammers offer the 27-year-old the chance to advance his career.

West Ham could be a great fit for Ramsey should he leave the Gunners. He’s settled in London so he won’t want to move, but West Ham gives him the chance to get first-team football whilst becoming a leader in the dressing room.

Ramsey has been a fantastic player and role model at Arsenal, but it seems like he wants to move on now. There has been mixed messages coming out of the club and he’ll be a great asset wherever he decides to go.

Woodward’s dream signing

According to the Standard, Manchester United chief Ed Woodward’s dream signing is Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane.

The report claims Woodward is willing to break the world transfer record for a defender, but it is dependent on the European champions sanctioning the deal.

Barcelona eyeing Christensen?

According to Sport in Spain, Barcelona are keeping tabs on Andreas Christensen, the Chelsea defender.

Suggestions are that they are keen on the Dane if Samuel Umtiti, the World Cup winner, has to have an operation.

Umtiti has a knee injury that is worrying Barca staff.

Matthijs de Ligt, the Ajax defender, is Barcelona’s No.1 target, but Ajax are unwilling to sell until next summer.

That could see Barcelona move now, for Christensen, potentially freeing up De Ligt for others next summer; Juventus are monitoring his situation.
