Millions of Nigerians had looked forward to Presidential and National Assembly elections today, after a long period of electioneering campaigns and preparations by various Political Parties and their Candidates.

Suddenly, about 2.43 this morning, the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission; INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced that the elections have been postponed to Saturday 23rd February, 2019.

Subsequently, the election of Governors and Members of Houses of Assembly earlier slated for Saturday 2nd March, 2019 has been rescheduled for Saturday 9th March, 2019.

According to Prof Yakubu, the Commission took the decision ‘following a review of the implementation of its logistics and operational plans and determination to conduct free, fair and credible elections’.

The reason given by the Electoral Commission for this last minute postponement is, in all intents and purposes, untenable, illogical and unacceptable.

What logistical challenges could compel the Commission to postpone an election that was billed to commence at 8 am today only at 2.43 am same day?

It has to be recollected that the Chairman of the Commission has given several indications of insincerity in handling  matters relating to the conduct of the 2019 general election.

His insistence that Mrs Amina Zakari, a close marital relation of President Muhammadu Buhari, will be in charge of Collation of election results, despite constructive and legitimate protests by the PDP and other stakeholders, shows that the man has a hidden agenda.

Of recent, the Chairman of the Commission; Prof Yakubu, just to assure President Buhari and the All Progressives Congress that he is out to do their bidding, starting putting on a particular cap, with broom as its design, which is associated with the President and members of APC. This does not smack of neutrality.

Within this week, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice; Mr Abubakar Malami, SAN, had written to INEC to postpone the elections to enable APC ‘get its house in order’ in Rivers and Zamfara States.

By postponing the election, Prof Mahmood Yakubu and the Independent National Electoral Commission have only acquiesced to the shenanigans and subterfuge of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice. With this, it is obvious that the Chairman is working not for Nigeria but the parochial interest of APC.

Before this unjustifiable and inglorious postponement, there had been intelligence that President Buhari had secretly instructed the INEC Chairman to postpone today’s elections only few hours to the election. According to the intelligence, the postponement is expected to frustrate the PDP financially. By the calculation of the Presidency, PDP would have put in much of its resources to the election and would suffer terrible financial losses if the election is abruptly put off.

The Chairman of INEC, by this act of savagery, has proved to be inconsiderate, inhuman and heartless. In postponing the election, he crudely refused to consider that many Nigerians would have to travel to the places they registered as voters. He also did not bother to consider that many businesses would be affected by the Commission’s teleguided action.

One thing is obvious, Prof Mahmood Yakubu is a hired enemy of democracy. Apart from being insincere and vulnerable to pecuniary inducement, Mamood Yakubu is grossly incompetent. Were we in a civilized clime, a petty character like Mahmood would not preside over a strategic Commission that requires integrity.

Sir Don Ubani.
